Rochester-Finger Lakes Regional Exhibition
|
"Home" is at the Rochester-Finger Lakes Regional Exhibition at the Rochester Institute of Technology's Bevier Gallery. I made parts of this piece in the summer of 2010 and completed it this winter. It's a lovely reminder of what's on the way!
Two of my Middle School students from McQuaid Jesuit have artwork up as well. It’s a wonderful Exhibition that showcases both students and their teachers.
From Friday, February 4, 2011 until Sunday, February 27, 2011.

Anti-smoking “Found” Ads
|
Searching for some inspiration in some old magazines piled up in an art studio, I stumbled on these ads. They shocked me because I couldn’t get past the irony. Since they gave me a sick feeling, I felt they might be useful to make my protest. I couldn’t get them out of my head. I’ve watched many loved ones struggle with this addiction and felt powerless to help them at times. I found it so interesting that these ads seem like foreboding warnings.
The Capri ad is changed slightly with the addition of the graveyard background, deathly smoke, and the “fact” at the bottom. The disturbing slogan at the top is untouched.
The Kent ad is altered by one word, DEATH. "The experience you seek” slogan was also already there, which I found creepy with the faded figures. Smoking even killed their dog!
I hope you enjoy the irony in these ads as much as I do and also make a stand to make the right choice. In 2004, I used Photoshop to alter these. If you would like to see more health related work in a different media, please see "The Choice Between".
Slowly but surely, with the right awareness, education, and choices, we can stop this insanity.

A Garden to Tend
|
I started this series in fall 2004 and finished, finally, during the summer of 2007. Nature is a big inspiration to me and the subject of “A Garden to Tend” started with planting, watching, weeding, watering, and photographing, different plants. Gardening is full of successes and heartache and the “gardening” continued with this series for quite some time.
I also think of this piece as an evolution of art. It started with transforming my digital photos of my garden to a Photoshop rendered collage, then creating a painting from that, followed by scanning the painting to manipulate into the third panel, and finally painted on top of the third for a combo of computer-generated art/painting to make the last. Sounds complicated, but essentially I just kept transforming the same image with slight variations using either the computer or oil paint. Located in my dinning room, it’s a wonderful way to enjoy my garden during the winter months, especially since it no longer taunts me unfinished in my studio. I’m enjoying it because it still feels like a harvest from a long gone garden.

Welcome
|
Welcome to my art website where I will post old and new art slowly but surely. I’m an artist that explores many mediums, so look forward to a little bit of everything. Oil painting is my favorite but I don’t always have the time because I’m also an art educator. I will devote part of my site to art education as well because it is so important in my life, yet challenging at times. Thank you Pale! I’m excited to get started!
This computer-generated Self-Portrait was done quite a while ago, 2002 I believe. I still love it and I have fond memories of pressing my face to a scanner. When I teach my first computer art class, this will be one of my first projects. It’s a fun way to learn Photoshop filters!
