New Restaurant - Boardwalk Inn
When Family was visiting, they wanted to check out a local restaurant. Without a plan, we heading into town on a mission to learn more about our food community in Brockport, NY. First stop, Jimmy Z's, probably a local college favorite for late night fast food. The menu was full of fried this and that plus Rochester's favorite garbage plates which made us scuffle back out. We headed across the street to Barber's Grill, a local bar that was packed, so we moved on and found The Boardwalk Inn around the corner.

We had no idea this place was here and found out they have only been open for about 6 months. We were greeted by a warm atmosphere as we entered from the murky weather. We were quickly seated and I couldn't help but notice the fun artwork of party scenes on loan from Artisan Works. What a great way for one local business to support another. The overall decor was close but a few changes would make it perfect in my opinion. I love rustic contemporary. With all the wood, warm colors, and modern art, they're almost there. The problem was too many knick-knacks and fake flowers that just end up collecting dust, especially when perched high on overhead shelves. Even the cheap paper placemats were quite unappealing after soaking up drink condensation. Save your money and keep your tables simple.

The menu was interesting and had historical pictures of the Erie Canal. Honoring history is something this whole town can relate to and is greatly appreciated. Mike ordered their Boardwalk Signature Flat Iron Steak with sweet potato fries and a side salad. Unfortunately, he was not pleased with his meal. At $14.99 his "medium" steak was strangely portioned and mostly overcooked. His sweet potato fries came with a super sweet and thick caramel dipping sauce that was meant for ice cream and not this entree.

I got the Pittsburgh Steak Salad that also featured the flat iron steak and french fries. The more I think about it, the more I believe that I got the ends of his steak on my salad. I ordered medium as well but they were tough little beef chunks. I wondered if we could have pieced it back together like a puzzle. My salad was ok, although I have two pet peeves to address: little plastic containers for dressing and iceberg lettuce. Little glass bowls would be so much better for the environment, not to mention, a better presentation. If you don't make fast food, don't use plastic condiment containers. There are also so many flavorful lettuces but if you want to use something crisp and light, use romain not iceberg! I really hope Boardwalk will be inspired by the Brockport Farmer's Market around the corner from them!

What Mike's Dad got is definitely worth noting. He got the Boardwalk Donut Burger with cheddar and bacon. It was kind of funny because I told Mike that he wasn't allowed to get that because all that saturated fat scares me a bit. But after a rave review, I did say that we could share it among friends as an appetizer someday.

Craft Beer was pretty much non-existent (except for a random Magic Hat) which lead to a pretty interesting discussion on what craft beers would do well in a local place like this. At least having local Rohrbach's Bluebeary and Scotch Ale seems fitting. Imagine sitting outside watching the boats go by while sipping a Rohrbach's Scotch Ale. Wait... I can do that at home, so the food's got to get better to draw us in.

I think I'm being hard on them because I had such high hopes walking in and the fact that they are new means they can fix a few things. Mike and I long for a local place we truly love to bring family/friends to but right now that place is Rohrbach's in Chili. This place has potential and we will try it again sometime this summer.

You just read one of Upstate Crumbs' monthly New Restaurant posts. Each month, Mike and Heather will make it a point to eat at a restaurant they have never eaten at before and post about it. Want to follow us on the local journey? Check out our Foursquare List
