New Restaurant - Pittsford Grill
I started working at Tobey Village Office Park over five years ago. If you aren't familiar with it, it's a strange little retro office park located on the corner of Jefferson and Clover in Pittsford. When I started there, Heather and I immediately took notice of the Crystal Barn restaurant sign. We always wondered what kind of place it was but never ended up going. We were a bit bummed when we heard it closed.

Well, I'm still working in the same office park and The Pittsford Grill has opened in its place. It's distinctly possible that my job will be moving to a new location in the near future. As such, we thought it made perfect sense to hit up the grill for our New Restaurant for September.

The restaurant was extremely quiet as we walked in. After some confusion over who the actual host was, we were shown to our seats. The main dining area is upstairs. It's immediately obvious why the previous restaurant had 'barn' in the title. The setting is that of a barn loft. Its very clean and well finished but Heather and I both noted a strange musty smell. It wasn't overly potent, but it was there. Not the best thing to eat a meal to.

The d?cor was a bit odd as well. There were modern, funky chandeliers littered around the dining area. This was undoubtedly an intentional contrast of the ornate chandeliers, art nouveau paintings, and unfinished walls. We liked the intention but it just wasn't taken quite far enough. I got the impression that they were trying to be funky, but not so funky that they could turn off their clientele.


As I said before, the restaurant is located in an office park. Next to the office park is a retirement community. It was evident (at least on this particular Wednesday evening) that their patrons are coming more from the retirement community than the office park. We were the youngest people in the dining room by at least 25 years.

Our waitress was very pleasant. She stumbled over her words a bit in the beginning. I appreciated it. Her moment of clumsiness immediately removed any self-consciousness on our part, which makes asking silly questions and taking pictures of our food much less stressful.

Drink wise I had a Bass Ale. Their beer list was basically non-existent. This dumbfounds me because having a great beer list and happy hour would bring people from the office park in droves. Maybe they don't want that crowd? Heather got a glass of white wine. We didn't actually receive a wine list, but the waitress was very nice in helping Heather pick something out.

Along with the drinks came your standard basket of bread. They turned up the volume a bit with a great flavored pepper butter. We polished off the basket fairly quickly and our waitress brought us out a second batch. This had me a bit nervous because we were on a bit of a deadline and my brain immediately thought of it as a stall tactic. Was something going wrong in the kitchen?

While we pondered that, we had more time to take in the overall atmosphere. There was some out of place 50s music playing over the speakers. It really bothered Heather. We had a good laugh as she explained, "This music is only good for old car shows with my dad." That's a pretty niche market for the music. This brought on some nice conversation about the shows she used to go to with her family. Her and her sister used to crawl underneath the show car to color in colorbooks. Great way to find some shade and avoid all the crazy car guys around.

Our meals ended up coming out in relative short order after that, so my concern was unfounded. I got a ribeye steak with a balsamic barbecue sauce and asparagus on the side. It was honestly one of the best steaks I've ever had. It had a great charred and peppery crust. They cooked it a touch past the medium that I requested but it wasn't a big deal. There was a balsamic reduction artfully spread on the plate and I received the barbecue sauce on the side. Honestly, I wanted to eat the steak with just the balsamic reduction. That was good enough for me. The barbecue sauce actually took away from it a bit. It was just a normal barbecue. I didn't get any hint of balsamic in it at all? Was it truly a balsamic barbecue sauce or was I just supposed to mix it with the drizzle on the plate? I'm not sure. The asparagus were good and well seasoned but I swear the menu said they would have a hollandaise sauce on them. They didn't.


Heather got Chicken Madeira. I got to try a bit of it and it was quite good. Tasted like a good Italian chicken dish. Heather was pleased too. The chicken was cooked nicely and she was pleasantly surprised that the spinach on her mashed potatoes was freshly wilted and not frozen. The serving size was substantial as it had two good-sized pieces of chicken. She did her best to polish it off but couldn't quite do it.


As we were finishing our meals, the bad 50s music was replaced with a live musician playing a baby grand piano. This was a lot nicer. They should really get him started playing earlier than 6:15. Overall, we were quite happy with the food at the Pittsford Grill. The table water even had a cucumber flavor to it that was refreshing. That said, I'm not sure we'll be going back any time soon. Entr?es are pretty pricey ($18-$30). Not the kind of place we can afford to be regulars at.
