Vacation - Venice
The second leg of our Florida vacation was spent in the familiar little city of Venice. For as long as I can remember we have made regular trips to see family there. Because of our West Palm Beach stop, our time there was limited to just two days. In those two days, we made sure to hit some of our favorite spots.

For lunch on the first day, we made it a point to go to Marker 4 Oyster Bar. It's a cool little restaurant right on the water in a harbor. More notably, it was one of my grandparents' favorite places before they passed away. Going there always brings back wonderful memories. It's always extremely crowded, but we managed to get a table after only a little while.

We started our meal with a fried alligator appetizer. It went around the table and everyone tried it. The consensus was that it was pretty good, but they fried the living heck out of it. We ate it all up, but it was pretty indistinguishable from regular chicken fingers.

For the main course, I was feeling particularly adventurous. Given our location, I thought it was necessary to get some seafood and I decided on a cod Rueben. Ruebens are quickly becoming one of my favorite sandwiches and this one did not disappoint. The fish was a pleasantly lighter alternative to the normal corned beef. It made it a great lunch sandwich. Heather wanted to try some oysters, given the "oyster bar" portion of the restaurant name, but there weren't really any exciting ones on the menu. I don't think either of us like them well enough to just want to eat some plain Jane ones. So instead, she went with a fresh strawberry salad from their specials menu. It looked really good from where I was sitting. Overall, I think we both made good lunch choices. A lot of the food we had to that point on vacation was quite heavy.

On our second day in Venice, we went to a local Mexican place called Mi Pueblo. We made a big family trip there two years ago when a bunch of us were down in Florida visiting and we liked it so much we wanted to make sure to get back there. We got there in time to enjoy half priced margaritas and definitely took advantage. For my entr?e, I got Pollo con Mole. Mole is a sauce that is shocking for everyone when the first hear about it. Chocolate in a savory Mexican dish? Say what? Every time we see someone making one on TV, we are intrigued. Heather and I laughed because it was one of the first things to catch both of our eyes on the menu. It didn't disappoint either. The sauce was so good, I found myself making rice tacos out of my left over tortillas just so I had another reason to wipe sauce up off the plate.

Heather went with one of their combination plates, choosing an Enchilada De Espinacas and a Tamale. When it first came out, we were all a little confused because we were expecting the tamale to be in a corn husk, but they must have taken it out before plating. She enjoyed her meal as well.

After we were done eating, the waitress brought the check out and my Aunt told her she had to take it back. We hadn't ordered dessert yet after all. Taking her suggestion, we got a plate of Sopapillas for us all to share. Heather and I didn't really know what to expect but what came out was wonderful. They were big pillows of fried dough with a coating of sugar. Along with it came whipped cream, a melted chocolate sauce, and some honey packets. Heather was convinced that this was providing a choice. I, however, opted to put them all on mine. It was sweet and amazing.

We definitely made the most of our short time in the area. If anyone finds themselves down in Venice, I highly suggest checking out both restaurants.

Mike Sorry this post is a bit delayed. I had it drafted up for quite some time but then we had some computer issues.

We should have some more things coming soon. A post from our Boston trip and maybe one more from Florida. :)
