Flower - Play It
There was a lot of hype behind That Game Company's second PSN game. FlOw was a flagship title for Sony's downloadable games and Sixaxis controller. It was an interesting title but it wasn't all that deep (pun intended). Despite my lukewarm reaction to flOw, I found myself desperately looking forward to Flower. When it finally hit, I was caught up in some other games and I forced myself to finish them first. Well last weekend I finally grabbed it.

Just like flOw, the majority of Flower is controlled using the motion sensing capabilities of the Sixaxis controller. Tilting it steers the wind and holding any button increases the wind's speed. Sound confusing? It's really just a flying game and the amazing visuals make flight an invigorating experience, though with it comes the possibility of significant motion sickness. I handled it fine while playing but my other half couldn't even watch for an extended period of time. This was pretty disappointing as it really is an art game and I wanted her to experience it.

Flower really doesn't feel like a game during the first play through. Thankfully there are some more traditional elements once you dig a little deeper. The PlayStation Trophies help uncover some of the hidden aspects a bit, but there are also three hidden flowers in each level that you can find. This greatly encourages exploration, adds to the longevity, and brings the player into the experience more. As a player becomes engrossed the value of presentation becomes all the more apparent. Art games have a definite place in this industry and Flower is a shining example of that. Give it a play through.
